ST. ALBANS CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH (Jamaica, NY)

As the President of With Actions and in Truth, Inc., I stand on the shoulders of several brothers of the Nehemiah Men’s Ministry of St. Albans Congregational Church, who re-launched the church’s sandwich ministry at the beginning of 2014. Once a month, ministry “leader” Dwight Nelson shopped for the bounty (turkey meat, cheese, Capri Sun fruit drink, bread, fruit) and brought in “recruits” to prepare the sandwich packages on a Friday evening. I was part of the team that went out the following morning to distribute the packages at a local family shelter and at the Bedford Armory men’s shelter in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, due to changes in the leadership of the ministry near the end of that year, the sandwich-making came to a halt.

Over the years, there have been preliminary talks to “Find a way to take what it is you’re [With Actions and in Truth] doing and combine it with the church.” We were finally able to make this happen the Friday and Saturday of August 11th and 12th. Fifteen volunteers came through on Friday afternoon to take part in this outreach. We were able to get a good assembly line going within the confines of the church’s kitchen and prepped 250-plus packages in little over an hour. Some members of the congregation returned the following morning, and we were able to form three teams to distribute the packages throughout Queens.

We collaborated with St. Albans Congregational Church a second time, Friday, September 8, to prep sandwich packages to distribute to the homeless and hungry. Several of the 18 volunteers were returnees, while a few were newcomers. The team prepped nearly 300 packages in little over an hour. Once again, members of the church family came out the next day to distribute the packages throughout Queens.
