ROCHDALE VILLAGE COMMUNITY CENTER (Jamaica, NY)

Rochdale Village (“The Jewel of Jamaica”) is a 5,280-apartment housing cooperating in the Southeast, Queen section of New York, Julia Shaw, the Director of Rochdale’s Community Center, reached out to us about having some of her “kids” help on a Friday evening to prepare sandwich packages (Sandwich, fruit, water) to distribute to the homeless and hungry the following day.

Although we did not initially speak on it, I assumed her “kids” were teenagers. However, once we set a date of Friday, May 19, I was a bit taken aback to learn that her kids were Girl Scout troops ranging in age from five to thirteen. Nevertheless, with the help of Troop leader Sabrina Hunter and one or two parents, we got a good assembly line going and knocked it out to the tune of 200-plus packages in little under an hour.

Through Ms. Shaw, we again teamed with Rochdale’s Community Center; the morning of Friday, August 4 We were aided this time with kids who were part of the Summer Camp. With the help of Amber Melton, the Assistant Program Director of the Rochdale Village Academy Summer Camp, and a few of the counselors, who oversaw the set-up of an assembly line, the kids, ranging in age from six to 12, prepped 200-plus packages in an hour.
